Assessing Your Skills & Interests
There are a number of tools at MSU and online for evaluating your interests and skills. We suggest starting with tools right here on the MSU Career Success website:
- My Plan
- PREP Assessments– for testing your skill development in areas that employers have identified as essential
You can take a number of personality, skills, and interests assessments in person, including the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Strong Interest Inventory. An overview of different types of assessments can be found here. Please contact Career Services to set up an appointment for an in person assessment: (517) 355-9510. Indicate that you are a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow when you call.
Transferable skills are skills you acquire or learn in one setting that can be applied or translated to new and different settings, environments, and activities. Doctoral students often fall into the trap of seeing their skills as applicable in only one setting, thus do not recognize that they are qualified for a wide variety of career paths. Don’t let this happen to you! Click here to view a list of skills most sought after by employers, and to identify which ones you have and which ones you would like to develop further.
